Welcome to the Magistrate Room
Your room was one of the primary classrooms for Jefferson City’s first public school built in 1904.
When the front building was turned into a very active City Hall in 1930, this space became the Magistrates office and the courtroom. City Council also convened here.
Fun Facts about the Magistrate Room
Behind some of the walls in this room are chalkboards the teacher and children used for almost 30 years.
When it became City Hall, church pews lined either side with an aisle down the middle with the judges’ desk
between the two front windows.
At one point in this room’s history, they had a pool table in the center of the room where the firemen would
enjoy time to play.
You will see on the outside wall between the wall on the right with the dresser and the window was the fireplace
flue where the chimney was located.
A coal stove once stood there and was the only thing that kept the children warm while they studied.
Back in 1904 they had plaster and sand walls. They had no insulation as we know it today.
