Historic

Old City Hall

It began with land donated by John Roper Branner and a building dedicated to, as the cornerstone reads, Branners son Sir Knight William Branner and the Masonic Lodge 353 in 1868. The second floor was solely devoted to the Masonic Lodge chapter and the lower level for educational purposes and held the Masonic Female Institute (1870-1879). These women were relocated to the Old Mossy Creek Baptist College campus 1882 and this in essence became a continuum that became Newman College and then the Masonic Public School for boys and girls opened at the lodge.

On June 28,1904 with a half holding in the lot deeded to the government by the Masonic Hall Lodge 353, the city erected a two story addition fronting Branner Avenue. and it became the first public school grades 1 through 12. In 1930 the front addition became Jefferson City, City Hall while also hosting the Fire Department and Police Department to include a Jail.
